Miranda, Jr. is an accomplished strategist and philanthropist who focuses on a diverse range of issues affecting working-class Americans. Miranda has over four decades of experience as a leader in the public, private, political, and advocacy sectors.

When his son Lin-Manuel’s artistic work became financially successful, the family, under Luis’ leadership, reinvested in a pipeline of artists of color to support new voices in the arts. Join the Mays Institute as we hear from Luis Miranda, who became a leading voice for increased support to Latino nonprofits and a widely admired partner for corporate and private philanthropic leaders.

Bio

For over 40 years, Luis and his family have championed community activism, developed and solidified Latinx-led organizations, participated on their boards, provided counsel, and supported them financially. They have created and supported institutions that serve underserved populations in Upper Manhattan along with communities throughout New York City, across the country, and in Puerto Rico.

The Miranda family continues to foster the family’s commitment to advocacy for education, the arts, and social justice, along with a sustained focus on relief and rebuilding efforts in Puerto Rico. Since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017, Luis and his family have partnered with The Hispanic Federation to create the UNIDOS Fund, raising over $46M for relief and rebuilding efforts. The goal of the fund is to support community-based organizations that support recovery and strengthen resilience. In addition to raising funds, the Mirandas continue to advocate for adequate federal rebuilding funds for the island. In October 2018, Luis and his son, Lin-Manuel Miranda, announced a partnership between Hispanic Federation, Starbucks, Nespresso, and The Rockefeller Foundation to rebuild Puerto Rico’s coffee sector. In collaboration with Hamilton and the Flamboyan Foundation, Luis co-created the Flamboyan Arts Fund, which raised $15M for arts and culture in Puerto Rico to be distributed over a three- to five-year period.

Most recently Luis has been focused on COVID-19 relief efforts, acting as chair of New York-Presbyterian Hospital’s Northern Manhattan Emergency Recovery Fund for small businesses in the neighborhood, and partnering with the Hispanic Federation to create the HF Emergency Assistance Fund for immigrant-focused community nonprofits.
